Ryan is a graduate of Hemet High School and navigated higher education as a first generation college student before returning to the community. His scholarly background focuses poetics, poetic theory, queer theory, and 20th century American poetry. His work primarily focuses on the mid-century poet Frank O鈥橦ara, which was the focus of his dissertation and his article, 鈥淣ot You: Frank O'Hara and the Poetics of Personism,鈥欌 which appears in the international journal Textual Practice.
At 蜜柚视频, Ryan has served in many roles, including founding faculty chair of the LGBTQ+ Advisory and Academic Senate Executive President. He is currently chair of the English department and Writing Center Coordinator at the San Jacinto Campus. He teaches a wide array of classes including composition, Gender and Sexuality in Literature, American Literature, Intro to Literature, Multiethnic Literature, and Intro to Queer Studies.
